SkyOps is an AI drone mission assistant built by Bangkok University's Center of Specialty Innovation. It uses a large language model (ChatGPT) to turn mission commands written in everyday language into structured flight plans a drone control system can run, so operators can task a drone without technical expertise or writing code.
The AI
- A large language model reads each chat message and turns it into drone commands, such as sow.rotate("90")
- A later version adds computer vision on the drone's own camera
How it works
- Type a command such as "Survey the warehouse area on the north side at 9 a.m."
- SkyOps works out the place, the time and what the mission is for
- It builds a flight plan with coordinates, flight paths and parameters
- The plan goes to the drone control system over MQTT or a drone SDK
- Change, cancel or add to a mission while it runs, in the same chat
- It learns from commands and mission types you use often
Made for
- Security patrols and surveillance
- Agriculture, such as fertilizing farmland
- Logistics and parcel delivery
- Search, rescue and disaster response
Results
- 60% less time to set up a mission
- Used in 20 real-world missions
- A complete working prototype
Built with
- ChatGPT (large language model)
- Computer vision on the drone camera
- Unity, for the drone simulation
- Node.js and MQTT
- Next.js and Tailwind CSS
